In the late 19th century several prominent American industrialists of the gilded age, sometimes called "Robber barons", among them J. P. Morgan, George Maccullogh Miller, Morris K. Jesup, Cornelius Vanderbiltformed a charity organization that was originally referred to the Hospital Saturday and Sunday Association.[1] Within several years it had expanded to include all of New York City and was beginning to spread out to the rest of continental USA.[2]. Today this organization is referred to as the United Hospital Fund.
